Hours and minutes to decimal hours
Turn an hours-and-minutes duration into a decimal without changing the work it represents.
Use a duration, not a clock reading
Enter the amount of time as hours and minutes. For 7 hours 30 minutes, use 07:30. A duration can exceed 24 hours, so 27:30 is valid as an amount of time. The field is not asking what time of day a shift started.
Divide the total minutes by 60
| Hours and minutes | Total minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|
| 00:15 | 15 | 0.25 |
| 00:45 | 45 | 0.75 |
| 07:30 | 450 | 7.50 |
| 08:15 | 495 | 8.25 |
| 27:30 | 1650 | 27.50 |
A decimal display is not the original record
Some minute values cannot be shown exactly with two decimal places. Twenty minutes is one third of an hour. Formatting that as 0.33 does not change the original 20-minute input. Add the original minutes before formatting a multi-entry total; three such entries total exactly 1.00 hour, not 0.99.
Check the separator when you copy
7.30 decimal hours is 7 hours 18 minutes. It is not the same value as 7:30. Keep column labels and units visible in a spreadsheet so a decimal point is not mistaken for a time separator. Use the reverse converter if the value you received is already in decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert a duration longer than twenty-four hours?
Yes. A duration such as 27:30 is 1,650 minutes and 27.50 decimal hours. It is an amount of time, not a time of day.
Why can three displayed 0.33-hour entries total 1.00 hour?
Each original 20-minute duration is one third of an hour. Add the original 60 minutes before formatting; adding shortened displays loses precision.
